Eric Pone Lay Associate Family Discipleship

Over the last year, I have been focused on preparing for seminary and preparing for my certification meeting with the District Committee on Ministry. I have read a lot of Wesley and a lot of what our denomination believes. All of this is to create a cohesive theology that will allow me to effectively show my readiness for ministry.

I have a theology of ministry practice that I would call Human-Centered Christianity. I stole this concept from Andrew Yang’s Human-Centered Capitalism because it summed up where I am.

Let’s face it our republic has been tested in a way not seen since the Great Depression. There have been rumors that 20% of mainline congregations face closure. That’s just sad and flabergasting to me because it shows that we the church haven’t flexed to the new heaven and earth that has been created from our recent apocalypse.

To grow disciples in this new plot of the garden it will require we once again adopt and adapt to an upside-down model of viewing the world. …

Won’t you save your Gut Biome!!

The Smurf Village is real and lives in your gut!!

Photo by Nigel Tadyanehondo on Unsplash

Each of us inherits a happy village of bacteria called our gut microbiome from our parents. It’s a happy place where our little village of trillions of critters share food and they protect our thin membrane within the intestines from leaking toxins into our body that triggers inflammation. You see toxins lead to excess sugar which feeds the bad bacteria, who make sugar alcohols which get absorbed through the intestines which causes inflammation and fatty liver disease and leads…to the fat, diabetes, metabolic syndrome…

A simple solution!

Losing Weight is Simple

Losing weight used to be for me a daunting problem. I looked like Grimace and felt bloated, tired, sore, and angry. I want to tell you that I tried a bunch of diets and none of them worked but I can’t. What I can say is Little Debbie and I had an intimate relationship.

Two years ago I got tired climbing the stairs after a fire drill. It was only for four floors! I had chest pain and I wanted to barf. I decided to devise a plan at that point to deal with this.

Step One…

And it's getting worse!

I use to have a really low bar. A candidate that is able to defeat Trump. I thought Biden could do that but he clearly has lost 800 steps since Obama’s administration. So now the Democratic Party lacks a candidate that can beat Trump. The race to the left on hyperdrive will only keep the working-class Black vote (which is the bulk of the vote for our community)at home in 2020. The Democratic Party needs to come to terms with their Black working-class voter problem.

Black men, in particular, don’t get the wage increase from higher…

Or how the hens come home to roost!

Thomas Lambrecht, vice president of Good News, issued the following response to UMC Next Conference this week in Kansas:

“The 2019 General Conference was proof that there is an impasse within The United Methodist Church with two irreconcilable viewpoints. Good News is disappointed that it appears from their press release that the institution-minded leadership of ‘UMC Next’ is determined to double down on the conflict in our church and refuse to acknowledge the decision made by the St. Louis General Conference reaffirming over 45 years of consistent United Methodist teaching.”

The Traditionalists…

Or how decades of US neglect created our own problem.

Why do people from Central America come here in droves? US neglect. All the countries are on the Heavily Indebted Country List, most get by on less than a dollar a day, the communities are extremely violent with gang warfare. Which we created and exported to them. So… if you ignore a region for over 100 years save for minor drug war incursions. If you fail to provide decent investment and cede the area to China. And if these countries are heavily dependent on money coming from workers abroad and…

Sometimes it sucks to stay

So the Traditionalists not only won the floor votes this week but added teeth. Christians that supported LGBT Christians were not welcomed. There was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. Humbleness was left at home. So you are not welcomed at home anymore what do you do?

Well you leave! It is time for Centrists and Liberals to admit the obvious. The UMC has become yet another generic triumphalist, conservative evangelical movement. And that is Okay! It really is. We now know that there is no middle way. …

Unrepentant Discrimination in the United Methodist Church

In 2004 a structure was created by a so called “renewal movement” called Good News. If Good News means driving out minority voices that is. In lieu of writing a summary it is best that I just attach their own words below. Folks the Right’s goal is to “curate” society in this case the United Methodist Church. Discriminating against the LGBTQI community is wrong and efforts to do so must be brought into the light. I don’t recall Jesus dying on the cross for orthodox fundamentalist people only.

Options for the Future

I have been inundated lately with perspectives on the coming splitting of the United Methodist Church. It has always been my belief that organizations that are large tents tend to grow and those that are small tents, defined tents tend to wither and die. It is not that people love God less. They don’t. It is not that people are not joiners. Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram all have significant Christian communities on the platforms that dwarf any congregations size in the denomination. People want to be part of a community. But they don’t want to be dictated to. They don’t…
